I was sent to Japan to make a difference, rationalize operations and turn things around. Working with Mr. Nevins, in 1982 we were successful in significantly cutting back payroll and other fixed costs as well as changing or putting an end to certain past practices and policies that were out of line with local custom.
Conflicting and cautious advice from legal and other advisors doesn’t help in getting the job done. Nevins concentrates on what will be done and not on what can or can’t be done. He gives the expatriate manager the facts, perspective and confidence he needs to take initiative and manage effectively just as in more familiar territory.
